GigE (Gigabit Ethernet; GbE):
"GigE" and "GbE" are both used as abreviations for "Gigabit Ethernet" - a term describing various technologies for transmitting Ethernet data at a nominal speed of one gigabit per second (1 Gbps = 1000 Mbps = one billion bits per second). That is about 667 times as fast as a T-1 connection. Gigabit Ethernet is defined in the IEEE 802.3 standard, and is used as an enterprise backbone. A related term is "1000BASE-T" - the proposed IEEE standard that defines the requirement for sending data at 1000 Mbps on unshielded twisted-pair cabling, or in other words, Gigabit Ethernet over copper cables.
