A month or so ago, filelodge.com sent out emails to its users, strongly suggesting that their files would be deleted if they did not "confirm" their accounts via SNS. Those who did found themseles paying a hefty fee - doubly infuriating because their files were never in danger: in VERY pale text at the bottom of the "Confirm your account" page to which the email linked, were words to the effect of "do not worry if you cannot send a text or do not wish to do so, we will pursue a variety of methods in determining spam accounts". Evidently someone complained to the authorities, because that page was very quickly replaced with another one which cited "problems" with their phone account as the reason for their discontinuation of the SNS confirmation initiative. However, they have not ruled out similar "dirty tricks" in the future.

Recently, filelodge has been bought out by Bolt.com and is now hosted on their site - which means I can no longer access my files at college because bolt.com is categorised as an "adult" site. The site interface has become increasingly trashy to the point where you can barely locate the login form. I am a firm believer in ad-paid free services, but I also believe a site must conform to some aesthetic standard, and quite frankly filelodge has become an unnavigatable eyesore. Still, we were assured in the news update:

"You may be wondering if the services offered by File Lodge are going to change - and we can assure you that they won't be. The original File Lodge owners will still continue to operate/develop the site, and will be working hard to make it even better".

By "make it even better", Bolt.com evidently means "remove the direct linking feature that was the sole distinctive of the site and instead force would-be downloaders to wade through up to three pages of epilepsy-inducing Flash ads of the worst description. They still offer 500MB of space and unlimited bandwidth, which is the only reason I continue to use them. However, if their descent into sub-Rapidshare "file sharing" continues, and if they continue to pursue "account confirmation" initiatives that coincidentally happen to involve mobile phone bills and whited-out text, I shall be departing for greener pastures.

WHEN it works, it's fine. but, and it's been stated before, it takes a while to load mp3s and the song gets cut off, and this has been happening almost daily now. the other times, it doesn't even load at all.

I used this recently to link images to eBay auction listings and to include email links. Upload capabilities weren't too bad, and it had reasonable image manipulation. But all of my current storage on the web site is usually unavailable; my eBay listing just displays imagename.jpg; my email inclusions were unaccessible to the recipient and right now I can't access the website. I've moved elsewhere, although it's too late to do anything about my current eBay listing; I'll probably have to relist.

I received this E-Mail a few days ago. Cost to me in the UK £5.00. A lot of money for one text message. Normal rate here being about £0.10p or free per text message.

"We are requesting that File Lodge members verify their accounts by sending us an SMS / Text message from their mobile (cell) phones. Lately there has been a lot of abuse on the system, and we have had to introduce this extra verification measure to ensure that accounts belong to genuine users. By phone verifying users we hope to be able to remove non-legitimate users who make the performance of the service suffer. For instructions on how to verify your account, please visit http://www.filelodge.com/phoneactivate.php
We would appreciate it if you can verify your account straight away, as in the future non-verified accounts may be removed from the system.
Best regards,
The File Lodge team"

It seems they discontinued that. See their news page:

"2006-04-11 - For those who have questions about the cellphone verification.
A lot of you have raised concerns regarding the SMS verification that we have been trying out, and unfortunately it will not be possible to reply to all of your emails, so this message is being posted here. Please do not worry if you do not have a cellphone/do not want to verify your account via SMS/are unable to verify via SMS. We will be analysing accounts for mis-use, and by verifying via SMS, it helps us determine that you are a legitimate account. This makes life easier for File Lodge when scanning accounts. We will not be automatically deleting accounts that haven't phone verified, as this is just one piece of the puzzle. So please do not worry about your account if you haven't sent an SMS in. It is likely that we will be giving extra benefits to phone-verified accounts in the future, such as more storage etc. We are very grateful to those that have verified because it helps simplify our work."

Terrible. I used it for a while, but I used it to stream mp3 files free, but when their servers are under load, it loads extremely slow, then it cuts off the song!

myfilehut.com isn't anymore as it should be because when you upload an audio file you hear their advertising sound first before it starts playing and that is very bad. Filelodge is the best you can get on the net and it's free....unbelievable!
